Passenger Numbers Take Off at Leeds Bradford Airportleeds bradford airport
Leeds Bradford Airport has seen a huge boost in passenger numbers in recent months. The airport served over 4 millions passengers in 2022, marking a 264% increase compared to the previous year when travel was impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The airport is gearing up for continued growth in 2023. A £12 million terminal extension opened last spring, and further upgrades are planned. These investments will expand capacity and improve passenger experience.
New Routes Driving Growth
Several new routes launched in 2022 have contributed to the airport’s resurgence. Destinations like Barcelona, Berlin, Edinburgh, Newquay and Paris opened up. These provide convenient options for Yorkshire holidaymakers and businesses.
Plans for 2023 include new Eastern European routes to Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Vilnius. Long-haul routes to Islamabad and Lahore are also on the cards.
Improved Facilities
The new extension added 2500 sqm of space to the terminal. This houses new shops, restaurants and seating. Check-in and security areas were also expanded to reduce waiting times.
Ongoing renovation works will further enhance the terminal. An improved baggage system is being installed. More self-service kiosks will speed up check-in. And refurbished washrooms will better accommodate passengers.
To improve sustainability, LED lighting is being rolled out in the terminal and on the apron. Solar panels will also be installed on the terminal roof.
Connecting the Regional
Leeds Bradford serves as a key transport hub for Yorkshire and the North. It provides connectivity between the region’s business hubs and popular holiday destinations.
The airport’s Managing Director, Vinay Dube, said:
“It’s been fantastic to see passenger numbers rebound as travel recovered post-pandemic. Our investments in new routes and facilities will ensure Leeds Bradford provides excellent service as we continue to grow.”
With its central location and ease of access, Leeds Bradford offers advantages over regional rivals Manchester and Newcastle. Travel time to central Leeds is just 20 minutes by taxi or rail link. And major motorways like the M62 and M1 are a short drive away.
Boosting the Local Economy
Expansion at Leeds Bradford Airport provides a lift for the regional economy. The airport supports over 4000 jobs, many with local employers. These include Jet2, Menzies Aviation, Swissport and the on-site DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.
Further jobs will be created as facilities are upgraded and services expanded. Construction and retail positions are already being advertised.
Increased passenger footfall also brings knock-on benefits for related sectors. Local taxis, trains and buses will see higher demand. And nearby accommodation, bars and restaurants can expect more visitors.
With exciting growth plans underway, Leeds Bradford seems set to strengthen its position as the Yorkshire region’s airport of choice. More passengers, routes and jobs will boost both the airport and the broader local economy.
